Biology

Whale sharks are unmistakable due to their large size (reaching over 18 meters) and checkerboard pattern of white spots splattered on their darker dorsal surface. Their spot patterns can also reliably be used to identify individuals over long periods of time. They are filter feeders feeding on a variety of plankton, small fish and even larger fish such as mackerel.
