Conservation status

Whale sharks are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Redlist of Threatened Species and their populations have declined significantly in many parts of the world. They are protected in South Africa and are listed on CITES II. Due to their migratory nature collaborative management is essential for conservation of the species.

Research

Research into the spatial and temporal behaviour of these sharks is being conducted by the Manta and Whale Shark Trust located in Mozambique and by Natal Sharks Board.
