White sharks have a variety of dorsal surface colours from light grey to pitch black, but underneath they are pure white and this is probably where their name originates from. They are apex predators at the very top of the food web and prey on a variety of seals, fish, smaller sharks and rays, but also readily scavenge on whale carcasses. This scavenging behaviour may be part of the reason they so readily approach the shark boats. White sharks can grow to 6.5 meters and weigh over 7000 pounds. At some stages of their life they are more resident in areas, but they are also highly migratory and at least one animal is known to have traveled from South Africa to Australia and back (home) again.

Other species to see on the dive

Thousands of Cape fur seals, African penguins, seabirds and even southern right and humpback whales can be seen on this trip (Jun - Nov).
