Shark Cage Diving in Cape Town
Shark Cage Diving in Cape Town is truly, an incredible experience. It’s an exciting adventure that will gift you memories to last a lifetime. Since the decline of Great White Sharks in False Bay from 2018, shark cage diving operators out of Simonstown have had to diversify by working with different species of sharks.
Bronze Whaler Sharks are one of the species that have been witnessed on our shark cage diving trips over the last year or so. These sharks are super stunning, they have this shimmery bronze colour on the top of their torpedo shaped bodies, and a natural curious behavior.
They are relatively large predatory sharks, coming in at around 2.5 to 3.2 meters (8-10 feet) in length. Bronze Whaler Sharks seem to be team players. Through observation, they seem to enjoy each other’s company and feel more relaxed in a group or “school” rather than swimming solo or solitary. Unlike the great white sharks that are preferably solitary animals.
This makes cage diving even more exciting with these Bronze Whaler Sharks, as we can have multiple sharks swimming around the boat at one time for cage divers and surface viewers.
Our shark cage diving experience is about showcasing these incredible sharks in their natural environment, for the beautiful, majestic and graceful apex predators that they are, rather than mindless monsters that media portray them as.
Our shark cage diving trip starts with meeting us at our Shark Explorers Dive Center in Simonstown, followed by boarding our vessel “Shark Explorer 2” and heading out the historical Simons Town harbour into the fresh ocean breeze of False Bay.
It’s a brief 30-minute travel across the bay to our cage diving spot. False Bay is abundant with marine life, there is always a possibility of seeing other marine animals namely, Cape Fur Seals, Common Dolphins, African Penguins, Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales, Brydes Whales (in whale season July-Nov), Cape Cormorants and other sea birds. Once we get to our destination, continuous information is provided to our guests on how our operation works and how we interact with the sharks in the most eco-ethical manner.
Shark Cage Diving is for almost everyone! From adventurous 10-year olds to a lovely lady who wanted to tick it off her bucket list at age 84. When our cage is deployed from the boat, is attached to the side of the vessel and floats on the surface, which means no experience is required at all.
To view the sharks underwater, its as simple as sitting in the cage with the water at your chest level, head above the water, then merely taking a breath and dipping your head no less than 30cm underwater when these stunning sharks come swimming past. (We provide all the gear).
If you’re not comfortable in water or a little chilly on the day, the surface viewing from the boat of these Bronze Whaler Sharks is just as incredible as the cage diving experience. Witnessing these sharks break the surface of the water with their golden bodies glistening in the sunlight as they curiously swim around the boat is sight that you’ll never forget.
