Bronze whaler Sharks with Shark Explorers
In recent years, the shark cage diving industry in South Africa has undergone significant changes due to the disappearance of Great White Sharks along the coastline. As a result, operators have diversified their focus to include other fascinating shark species within permitted areas.
Bronze Whaler Sharks (Carcharhinus brachyurus), also known as Copper Sharks, have emerged as the primary species targeted during our shark cage diving excursions. These impressive predators exhibit naturally curious behaviour, making them ideal subjects for up-close encounters.
Unlike the solitary nature of Great White Sharks, Bronze Whalers are known as schooling or shoaling sharks. This behaviour allows us to witness multiple sharks simultaneously around the boat, providing thrilling opportunities for cage diving and boat viewing.
Key Characteristics:
- Bronze Whalers can reach lengths of up to 3.3 metres (11 feet), with those we encounter typically measuring around 2.5 metres (8-9 feet).
- Their stunning copper coloration glimmers under sunlight as they gracefully navigate the water’s surface mere inches from our observation.
Feeding Habits:
- These fast-swimming predators primarily prey upon bony fish, pelagic fish like sardines and pilchards, smaller sharks, stingrays, and cephalopods such as octopus and squid.
- Bronze Whalers often hunt in groups, utilising their numbers to their advantage during feeding.
Habitat and Behavior:
- Found in temperate waters above 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), Bronze Whalers thrive in environments like False Bay and Simonstown. These areas offer optimal conditions for hunting and sustenance.
- They are closely associated with the annual sardine run off South Africa’s coastline, a spectacular natural event involving millions of migrating sardines.
Safety and Interaction:
- Bronze Whalers are not known for negative interactions with humans, with fewer than 15 non-fatal unprovoked attacks globally recorded. Their prey preferences naturally mitigate risks to larger animals.
