Shark cage diving in Cape Town

False Bay is a mere 30min drive from Cape Town international airport and a shark hotspot. This fun and educational trip is for the whole family, no age restrictions and no experience needed. We generally target three species of shark on these excursions namely Great white sharks, Bronze whaler sharks and the prehistoric Sevengill shark. These sharks are awesome! Nothing compares to seeing a shark in real life for the first time and all preconceived ideas are crushed with the first viewing.

General Information

You don’t even have to climb in the cage to get a good view as many of the sharks swim at the surface and some even pop their heads out to have a look at you. Join Shark Explorers as we head out to Seal Island and False Bay in search of one of the oceans top predators. We lower a cage in the water and you can have the opportunity of viewing these spectacular predators in their natural environment. You also stand a chance of seeing other marine life like seals, dolphins and whales while out in the bay.

The Dive: Cage comfortably takes 5 divers at a time, but can take max 6 if required. We mostly work on a breath-hold system in the cage as visibility is often limited and contact time with the animals underwater only lasts a few seconds at a time. The crew on the boat can see the sharks how they move and this way they can direct you to be looking in the right direction at the right time for the best views. A hookah scuba system is available for qualified divers and is great when visibility is more than 6m and the divers can follow the sharks as they move around the boat/cage! *Hookah scuba only available on request, please specify when making a booking.
The Boat: A maximum of 18 guests on board. No children under 5.
Dive depth: Surface cage.
Water Temp: 14 – 18º C
Water visibility: 3 – 20 meters

Other species on this expedition: Cape Fur Seal, Common Dolphin,
Bottlenose Dolphin, Brydes Whale, Southern Right Whale, African
Penguin and various other sea birds.

Provisional Daily Program

Arrival is scheduled between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, depending on environmental conditions and shark activity (subject to change).

Upon arrival at our dive shop, located just 35 minutes from Cape Town’s city center, you will be greeted by our friendly crew.
Enjoy complimentary hot drinks while getting acquainted with the team and other participants.
Take a short 5-minute walk from the dive shop to the harbor, where you’ll board the boat and receive a safety briefing along with general trip information.
Depart Simon’s Town harbor for a scenic 25-minute boat ride to our shark cage diving site.
Once at the destination, the boat will be anchored, and the cage deployed.
Chumming begins immediately to attract sharks to the area.
Our team will provide a thorough cage briefing and operational instructions, ensuring your safety and comfort throughout the trip.
Crew support is available for the entire experience.
The total time at sea is approximately 3–4 hours, depending on weather conditions and shark activity.
Upon returning to Simon’s Town harbor, a short debrief of the day’s activities will be conducted before you disembark.
Guests are then directed back to our dive shop to enjoy hot beverages, use our shower facilities, and explore a wide selection of branded merchandise.
